The tropical island of Cyprus is famous for its striking beaches and aquamarine sea, its wild clubs and nightlife and scattered roman ruins.
Perhaps it is the relaxed atmosphere and carefree attitude of many Cyprians that makes Cyprus one of the most popular destinations of Britons in recent years, somewhere that you can be sure of a relaxing time within the tropical temperatures and colorful surroundings.
As it is renowned for its clear weather and year-round humid climate, it is easy to take advantage of off-peak holidays and cheap flights to Cyprus in the winter months, while at the same time really giving you the chance to make the most out of your money.
The beaches are still heavily populated during the winter months and you certainly won't get a chill when swimming in those crystal clear waters being warmed by the sunshine.
Something which I find striking about this country is the sheer amount of ancient Roman remains there are strewn all over the Island. I have been to Italy and did not find this abundance of ruins on the side of the road! It is not an uncommon sight to see children using bits of Roman column as a kind of playground, so if you are a history fan you can be sure that there is no end to the artifacts of ancient Rome in Cyprus.
Apart from the ones on the road side, there are also many sites that are continually being developed and preserved. Some of the very best ancient sites are in Cyprus, where much of the walls and mosaics remain for you to see.
If history is your thing, one attraction you won't want to pass on is Kourion, which has a Roman amphitheatre that was constructed in the 2nd century. AD. It has a capacity of over 3,500 and much of the original construction remains. It was restored in 1961, and is now used for plays and events in the area. If you are lucky you may be able to watch one, but you will need to practice your Greek!
With flights heading into the Island all the time, be sure to check online for the best prices on holidays to Cyprus. If you are looking for cheap flights and bargain breaks you should consider going during the winter!
Speaking of the impending heat check out a blog post I wrote about summer safety in Cyprus when it comes to the intense heat and beaches here. A great reminder that it is not all fun in the sun and to use common sense and caution. To end on a positive note - enjoy your summer in Cyprus!
